Interview with Hitchin’ Post the Jackrabbit

Q: How old are you?

A:  I get asked that a lot, especially since the book has come out. Julie always says ‘old’ Hitch in the book, but I'm really not that old. I'm actually turning 40 this year, but you know what they say, “you're only as old as you feel,” and I still feel like I’m 22!

Q: How long have you worked for the 6Bs Ranch?

A:  Well, in the book it says:
Just like how he got his name,
when to the ranch he first came,
and next to a post he stood.
A cowboy threw a loop,
and around Hitch’s ears it stuck.
And so the name Hitchin’ Post stuck too!

I was only 18 years old that day, so I've been with the 6Bs for 21 years. Wow, time flies when you're having fun!

Q: Do you have any brothers and sisters?

A: Yes ma'am, I have 5 brothers and a ton of sisters!  In fact, you may get to learn about some of them in Julie’s next Hitchin’ Post book. (Wink, wink)

Q: Are you married?

A: No ma'am. I just haven't found the right girl yet, but I sure hope to find her someday.

Q. What is your favorite thing about cowboy life?

A: Well ma'am, I don't know if I can narrow it down to one thing. It's the overall taking care of the cattle and the land that I love. It's raising a herd on good, strong land that I'm proud of. Working the cattle and being outside on my horse is the fun part.

Q. Why did you feel it was important for Julie to tell your story, and what do you hope children learn from your book?

A: I feel that as the years go by, there aren't quite as many farmers or ranchers. Cowboys are a dying breed. It is a great heritage that I wanted to pass on to children. The adventures that I've had, I think children would find amazing, interesting, and new.
Sometimes I feel like time stands still out on the 6Bs and in today's world, there are very few places we have that feeling.

Julie Barker was born and raised in west Texas, and currently resides in Quanah, Texas, with her husband and three children.  She maintained her west Texas roots into college when she attended Texas Tech University in Lubbock, receiving a degree in social work.  Julie has grown up surrounded by the ranching heritage, and felt drawn to share this way of life through the adventures of the little cowboy jackrabbit, Hitchin’ Post.  Hitchin’ Post marks Julie’s debut into the world of children’s literature.  She was fortunate to have her mother, artist Carolyn Altman, provide the cute, whimsical illustrations of old Hitch and the 6Bs, making this project extra special.
