Airport Ranger volunteer Stacy Broussard expected a peaceful Saturday morning ride around the perimeter of Houston’s airport. What she encounters instead is a brutal homicide and a baffling mystery. Next to the body is an injured dog, the dead man’s motorcycle, and a drone armed with a laser capable of taking down a 747.
Though FBI Special Agent Alex LeBlanc sees a clear-cut case of terrorism, his past has taught him to be suspicious of everyone, even witnesses. Even bleeding-heart veterinarians like Stacy. But when her gruesome discovery is only the first in a string of incidences that throw her life into a tailspin, Alex begins to wonder if Stacy was targeted. As a health emergency endangers Stacy’s community, and the task force pulls in leads from all directions, Alex and Stacy must work together to prevent another deadly encounter.

“Mills does a superb job of character and plot development in this faith-filled series.” -- Christian Library Journal
“Mills’ writing is transparently crisp, backed up with solid research, filled with believable characters and sparks of romantic chemistry.” -- Novel Crossing
“Christy Award–winning Mills skillfully builds a menacing overall tone, and the tension level rises as layers of lies are peeled away in multiple plot twists. This novel, which takes off at a breakneck pace with a narrative arc that could have been ripped from today’s headlines, will greatly appeal to fans of James Patterson’s “Alex Cross” series and readers who enjoy psychological thrillers.” -- Library Journal starred review
“Mills takes readers on an explosive ride. The terror is all the more chilling because it could easily be a headline story on the nightly news, and Mills’ characters spring to life through their fears, strengths, and quirks. A story as romantic as it is exciting, Firewall will appeal to fans of Dee Henderson’s romantic suspense stories.” -- Booklist

Deadly Encounter

The Story Behind Deadly Encounter
Living in the great state of Texas fills me with pride for the vast and varied people and culture. Ideas for stories are found everywhere I take the time to look and listen. Some nuggets become gold and are mined onto the pages of a romantic suspense novel. Deadly Encounter has the distinction of topping the list for the first book in the FBI Task Force series.
The characters and plot began in 2012 when I experienced Houston’s FBI Citizens Academy. During this course of learning about the divisions of FBI and how they serve the community, country, and world, I met many wonderful people. One of them was a woman who volunteered with the Airport Rangers. This group rode the perimeter of Houston’s International Airport in twos and threes for the purpose of reporting any unlawful activity to Houston’s Police Department. Their website impressed me, and my suspense mode went into full gear. She’s slightly taller than me with a beautiful smile.
“Have you ever found a body?” I said.
“No. But I guess it’s possible.”
The nugget I mentioned above? This one refused to let me go. I learned my new friend loved animals—specifically dogs and horses. The story idea rose to a new level.
My husband and I drove to the stables where the horses for the Airport Rangers are kept. I snapped pictures. Then nearby to the private area where the volunteers ride. The thought occurred to me: What if a woman Ranger chose to ride alone one morning? What if she found a dead body, a wounded dog, a blood-splattered motorcycle, and a drone capable of taking down a 747?
Did I mention the story refused to let me go?
The creative juices continued to flow. My heroine is seeking custody of a twelve-year-old boy.
The hero must be an FBI Special Agent assigned to domestic terrorism.
The hero and heroine definitely were at opposite ends of attraction.
Oh, but they were both Cajun . . . stubborn, opinionated.
Now to bring in another agency to support a task force with the FBI. A disease breaks out in the city, and the Houston Health Department, the Center of Disease Control-CDC, and the Laboratory Research Network-LRN get involved.
The situation grows worse. The heroine’s and hero’s lives are turned upside down. Maybe they do like each other after all. Where does God fit in the chaos?
I’m a hybrid writer, a mix of a plotter and panster (organic). That means I have scenes in my mind, but how I get there is an exciting journey. No one was more surprised than me when my heroine stepped into a tragedy the morning she chose to ride alone.
My goal is for readers to Expect an Adventure. Every scene in Deadly Encounter is focused on you stepping into my character’s shoes and accepting the challenge to solve the crime and the problems life presents.
